The best coffee shops in Devonport aren't really hard to find, I've done that for you.

TL;DR: Harbourmaster Cafe or Fundamental Espresso. 

If you don't want to go off of my top picks above and instead want to choose from a variety of locations, this list of cafes in and around the Devonport CBD has you covered.

I won't go as far as saying any one location will serve the perfect coffee every time - those cafes are quite rare - instead, you'll likely find yourself satisfied by most, if not all cafes on this list.

As an avid coffee lover myself, I'd happily go to any of these locations and hope that my recommendations leave you with a positive experience while you're visiting my hometown of Devonport.

The Harbourmaster Cafe has recently become my favourite spot for food and coffee. Their menu recently underwent a revamp and now boasts some of Devonport’s best cuisine. 

Over a recent weekend in Devonport, I visited four times (don’t ask why so many times..) and as I visited with groups of people, I could see and taste most of the new menu. Without going into specifics, I honestly couldn’t believe this quality and food presentation was here in my hometown of Devonport.

A few favourites: the ramen, prawn and chorizo scramble, chicken souvlaki. The food was delicious and all feel so gourmet.

I could keep raving about the food but will withhold myself and finish with the location - gorgeous riverside views of the Spirit of Tasmania, the newly built Novotel and the family area. 

Make sure to call in advance to ensure you can grab a seat, it’s been packed on each of my visits.

If I were only to want a coffee, I'd likely drop into Fundamental Espresso. In terms of their baristas, as of my last visit, they know their stuff. It's not just a matter of mixing milk with espresso, their friendly staff know how to make a good brew.

If you're after food as well for a quick bite, there's something here to eat in or take away. I recall on one of my visits they had a delicious bagel - still memorable and would highly recommend trying if they still run them. Honestly, likely the best coffee in Devonport here.

So Leaping Goat isn't quite located in Devonport, but with anywhere on the North West coast of Tasmania, everything is a short drive away. I remember when they opened back in 2014 as local coffee roasters. I was only 16 then and not quite the coffee fan I am now, never paying it much attention. These days, I'd look at purchasing coffee there directly if I wanted locally sourced coffee beans. As with every cafe, they offer dine-in or takeaway. Not a bad location to stop by.

After your own coffee-making equipment? Leaping Goat is probably the best place to start.

Just around the corner from where I grew up is Brown Bear Eatery. Some history as to why I can vouch for this cafe despite only being here twice: growing up, this building was leased by so many businesses I lost count. All of them went under. Then as per usual, yet another cafe appears, Brown Bear Eatery. I imagined the owners would fall subject to the same unfortunate fate as countless others before them, however this never happened. Unlike their predecessors, Brown Bear had great food, great coffee and also located next to a park - perfect for families.

Today, they're still going strong. I couldn't recommend them more. 

Honestly, wasn't too sure whether to include it on the list. The main reason is I've felt the quality has decreased over recent years.. (they've been around a long time). I love the location (heart of Devonport) and atmosphere of the bottom floor. Upstairs in the backroom of Laneway, not so much. It's quieter, but I'm not often going for a quiet experience. If you are, this could be right up your alley.

On a hot summer's day, Bluff Beach is the go-to location in Devonport, which is where Drift Cafe is conveniently located. There are seating areas inside or outside of the cafe for dining in, as well as on the grassed area if you choose to order at their outside counter (unsure if you can also order coffee here or only inside).

Hillstreet Grocer is more than just a supermarket. The entrance area is full of gifts, treats and a cafe! Not quite the cafe for batch brews, unique specialty coffee beans or the like, instead, you'll find yourself with a solid latte, fresh smoothie or delicious sweet treat (any type of pastry is my personal choice). 

Toasties and coffee are what they do best. T4Toast is a coffee and food van located on Don Road. There's nothing more to say than to make sure you visit this Tasmanian coffee spot next time you visit Devonport.

If I were to pick in order, I'd start with Harbourmaster Cafe (if you're also after food) or go to Fundamental Espresso. After those two, I'd say try Leaping Goat or T4Toast. If those four options don't quite work, any of the others will provide a good experience to satisfy your coffee cravings.
