Where to Stay in Launceston Tasmania
Looking for where to stay during your visit to Launceston, Tasmania? Conveniently situated only a 15-minute drive from Launceston Airport, Launceston City has enough variety for any traveller. There are a few hotels to choose from near the scenic Tamar River, while others are just a short drive away in the charming surrounding areas.
I've found that choosing the right hotel can make or break your experience of a city. It's where you're meant to return to at the end of each day to relax, unwind and feel comfortable in. There's nothing worse than dreading your accommodation.
Below, I've put together a short list (removing locations I don't highly recommend) of accommodation I'd stay at personally. There are three hotels for everyone, and then three budget-friendly options.
If you decide to travel the state using either our 7-day or 14-day Itinerary, you'll be making a stop in Launceston City. If you've read one of the itineraries, you'll notice I've made a few accommodation suggestions there already. Here, I aim to provide the top locations I'd choose to stay at.
Now, let's go discover the best accommodation options located in Launceston.
Best Accommodation in Launceston
Hotel Verge Launceston

I'm a big fan of architecture that has been designed with intent. Aesthetic. Spacious. Sleek. Hotel Verge Launceston does this well.
They're Tasmanian owned and operated (you're dealing with locals here, not the large accommodation chains) which often brings about a more tailored and intentional experience. During your stay, you'll be receiving free wi-fi and movies, fully equipped hotel gym, free parking on-site (subject to availability), Tasmanian-made king beds, and so much more. There are four room types to choose from:
Verge King - 1x King Bed
Verge Twin - 2x King Single
Verge Luxe - 1x King Bed with better view
Verge Ultimate - 1x King Bed with an extra 10 square metres of space and bath
On the ground floor, you'll find Diverge Restaurant, open for breakfast and dinner seven days a week. Their menu showcases modern Tasmanian cuisine, using produce from around the state. Every meal is designed to give a taste of Tasmania.
How is Hotel Verge in terms of location? Close to the Launceston city centre. It makes visiting Launceston quick and easy, approximately 400m walk from the CBD and across the road from City Park. It's hard to beat here with free on-site parking and within walking distance of the city centre.
Peppers Silo Hotel

Turning a silo into a hotel... who would have thought that would be a good idea?
Well, that's exactly what you experience at Peppers Silo in Launceston, and it's one of the best accommodations in the city. The curved walls of the silo envelop you, creating a sense of space and elegance that's hard to find elsewhere. It's the kind of room where the light switches become a topic of conversation because even they exude a sense of thoughtful design.
Whether you want to dine at the Grain of the Silos Restaurant (couldn't recommend it enough), spend some time at the Silo Day Spa, or get your daily workout in, you have options. Walking to Launceston City is slightly further than Hotel Verge, but still possible. Parking is available from $15/night if you're travelling with a vehicle.
Outside the hotel is a parkland with BBQs and a children's play area. Warm spring and summer afternoons often attract large crowds here, highlighting how popular the area is. I've been here for a family BBQ and was amazed by how much thought was put into the design. Well worth it for families.
Hotel Grand Chancellor Launceston
All across Australia, Grand Chancellor provides outstanding service to their customers. Hotel Grand Chancellor Launceston is no exception. The hotel is located in the heart of the city, only a short walk from the CBD. Around 2 minutes. There are 165 rooms, all air-conditioned and approximately 36 square meters in size.
I find the standout for Hotel Grand Chancellor is its design. You're not experiencing the modern sleek design of Hotel Verge or Peppers Silo, but instead, modern elegance. You can expect the same complimentary service as our previous hotels, including free wi-fi, an in-house restaurant (Avenue Restaurant) and on-site parking from $6/day. Children under 12 can stay for free.
Budget Hotels and Accommodation in Launceston
Leisure Inn Penny Royal Hotel

I stayed here several years ago and was honestly quite surprised. For the same price as nearby accommodation in the city, I was able to stay in a room large enough for a family. Two levels, with the lounge/kitchen on the bottom floor and the bathroom and bedrooms upstairs. Was it anything special? Not particularly. Did it feel comfortable and provide everything I needed for my time in Launceston? Absolutely.
Unfortunately, I didn't try the on-site Alida Restaurant, but I've heard it's been a highlight for other guests when browsing through reviews. Alternatively, you could walk across the road to Stillwater Restaurant, which I have experienced on multiple occasions and would willingly return to.
Hotel Launceston
You're sacrificing convenience for the price here. But when convenience is an extra minute or two in walking distance to the city centre and slightly less modern rooms, for up to $100/night on savings, perhaps that's not at all an inconvenience.
City park is located just across the road, in-house Titanium Bar & Bistro has delicious food, and all rooms provide all you need for a comfortable and satisfying stay.
For a budget accommodation option, what else could you look for?
Best Western Plus Launceston
Best Western Plus Launceston sits at the heart of Launceston CBD, offering a blend of comfort and convenience for every guest. Even with the budget prices, you still have the convenience of a short 2-minute walk to the city centre. The hotel features spacious rooms with large windows, light interiors, refrigerators, and tea/coffee facilities. Entertainment is covered with smart TVs and Netflix. Bathrooms are equipped with hairdryers and free toiletries.
Unlike the other accommodations on this page, you have options for dining here. Either choose Snappers Restaurant (ideal if you'd prefer seafood), or Tram Bar (for anything other than seafood). If you decide on Tram Bar, you'll be welcomed with a Circa 1911 Launceston Tram. Not a normal experience, but a welcomed one nonetheless.
