Abandoned Train Tunnel at Tunnel
This is exactly what it sounds like, an abandoned railway tunnel in a town called Tunnel.
If you're in North East Tasmania, this is a great little adventure to embark on. You're going to find an old abandoned train tunnel, and that's about it. People have been walking through it for years, but recently there was a news article that advised visitors to refrain from doing so. You can find article here. If you do choose to venture into the tunnel, explore at your own risk.
The tunnel takes a minimum of 15 mins or so to walk through depending on much water has filled the tunnel. Flash lights are optional but quite helpful. Your phone flashlight might be sufficient.
I'd recommend to simply follow directions from Google Maps:
For those after written directions: you drive down Tunnel Road, which is a dirt road right off Golconda Road. Keep driving until you reach Tunnel Station Road. Turn down this road and follow it to the train tracks. From here, there is a sign pointing towards the tunnel, indicating it's approximately 200m away.
It's an incredible sight reaching the train tunnel and looks exactly as you'd expect from an abandoned tunnel.
The area appears to get wet and muddy so water proof shoes or gumboots would be optimal. Otherwise, expect to get your shoes wet and possibly dirty too.
I'd recommend not bringing young children or people that may struggle with slippery surfaces.
The abandoned railway tunnel near Tunnel, Tasmania, was built between 1885 and 1888 as part of the North-Eastern Line, which connected Launceston to Scottsdale and later extended to Branxholm and Herrick. Constructed with approximately one million bricks, it spans 704 meters and is a key remnant of Tasmania's railway history. The surrounding area was named "Tunnel," with a nearby station called "Tunnel Station."
This is a perfect pairing with the nearby Lilydale falls. Here's some more information if you'd like to do this as well.
